The tune appears in the large mid-19th century music manuscript collection of County Cork cleric and uilleann piper Canon biography:James Goodman. Hugh and Lisa Shield find the first strain of "The Coursing" cognate with the first strains of "For the Sake of Old Decency," "Farewell to Old Decency," and "Maid of Feakle (The)."
