PRINCE'S FAVORITE [1]. English, Country Dance Tune (2/4 time). G Major (Dale, Thompson, Watlen): D Major (Aird). Standard tuning (fiddle). AABA (Dale): AABB (Aird). The melody was earliest printed in John Watlen's The Celebrated Circus Tunes' (Edinburgh, 1791, p. 7), followed by George Willis' Compleat Tutor for the German Flute (published in London by Cahusac in 1792), and James Aird in his 6th and Last Volume of Scotch, English, Irish and Foreign Airs (Glasgow, 1803). The tune and dance directions were also entered into several period musicians' and dancers' manuscript collections on both sides of the Atlantic. Watlen notes the tune was associated with "Mr. Porter", referring to John Porter, a member of the equestrian company of the Edinburgh circus during the 1791 season.
