A member of a large tune family that includes "Cricket on the Hearth," "Damon's Winder," "Devil in Georgia (2) (The)," "Drunken Billy Goat," "Marmaduke's Hornpipe," "Mud Fence," "Ride the Goat Over the Mountains," "Rocky Mountain Goat," "Swiss Chalet." The name "Grand Hornpipe" is particular to northeastern Kentucky, although the tune is most commonly known in that region and other parts of the South as "Rocky Mountain Goat" (Titon, 2001).
