EDINBURGH VOLUNTEERS QUICKSTEP. AKA and see "Edinburgh Royal Highland Volunteers Quick Step," "Essex Band (The)." Scottish, March (2/4 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCCDD. "Edinburgh Volunteers Quickstep" was entered into the mid-19th century music manuscript copybook of flute player William Killey of Jurby, Isle of Man. Killey researcher Ian Radcliffe identifies the tune as "Edinburgh Royal Highland Volunteers Quick Step," composed along with a companion march by John MacGlashan and printed in Edinburgh, who may or may not have been related to the famous Scottish fiddle/composer Alexander "King" MacGlashan (d. 1797). John MacGlashan first surfaces in Aitchison's Edinburgh Directory for 1796-7, as Macglashan, John, piano teacher, 13 Thistle Street. The march can also be found as "Essex Band (The)" in Thomas Calvert's 1799 publication.
