COOPER'S HORNPIPE. AKA and see "The Exciseman's Hornpipe," "Fox in the Dumps," "Swan's Hornpipe." Scottish, Hornpipe. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB (Athole, Hardings): AA'BB (Kerr). Barry Callaghan (2007) included it in his section of duple-time tunes rather than hornpipes as he said "it also makes a great rant." The melody appears in a number of English 19th century musicians' manuscripts, including those of G. Huddeswell (Leeds, west Yorkshire), poet John Clare (c. 1820, Helpstone, Northants), and Swallow. In the Browne family manuscripts (Troutbeck, Lake District, Cumbria) it appears as "Swan's Hornpipe," while Northumbrian musician William Vickers had it in his 1770 manuscript twice, as "Fox in the Dumps" and "Exciseman's Hornpipe."

Printed sources: Callaghan (Hardcore English), 2007; p. 33. Hardings All Round Collection, 1905; No. 57, p. 17. Kerr (Merry Melodies), vol. 2; No. 346, p. 38. Stewart-Robertson (The Athole Collection), 1884; p. 297.
