HEIGHTS OF ALMA. AKA - "Alma (The)." AKA and see "Rakes of Mallow (The)." Scottish, Old-Time (?); Quickstep March. A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Well-known as the Irish tune "Rakes of Mallow"--the "Heights of Alma" title is perhaps a corruption of "Rakes of Mallow." It is a standard in Great Highland Bagpipe repertory, the "Heights" title named for the first pitched battle of the Crimean War. Curiously, it appears in a list of traditional Ozark Mountain fiddle tunes compiled by musicologist/folklorist Vance Randolph, published in 1954.
