RIBCHESTER BRIDGE HORNPIPE. English, Triple Hornpipe (3/2 time). Standard tuning (fiddle). ABCDEFGH. The tune appears in the collection of Thomas Marsden, published between 1697 and 1705. Unfortunately, very little is known about Marsden, although his collection contains tune titles from north west England. Ribchester, Lancashire, is a town in , the site of the Roman fort of Bremetennacum, and lay on a supply route from Manchester to Hadrian's Wall. The bridge spans the River Ribble and was originally constructed in 1669 on the site of an ancient Roman ford. It was washed away in 1772, and a replacement was constructed on the site of stone and has three segmental circular arches.
