Ribchester Bridge, 19th century
RIBCHESTER BRIDGE HORNPIPE. English, Triple Hornpipe (3/2 time). Standard tuning (fiddle). ABCDEFGH. The tune appears in the Collection of Original Lancashire Hornpipes, Old and New by Thomas Marsden, published between 1697 and 1705. Unfortunately, very little is known about Marsden, although his collection contains tune titles from north west England. Ribchester is a town in Lancashire, the site of the Roman fort of Bremetennacum, and lay on a supply route from Manchester to Hadrian's Wall. Successive bridges have spanned the River Ribble below the village, on the site of an ancient Roman ford. A bridge built in 1669 replaced an earlier structure, and when it was washed away in 1772 a replacement was constructed of stone with three segmental circular arches. This bridge still stands.
