Back to Cairngorm (The)

CAIRNGORM, THE. Scottish, Reel. G Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). One part. Composed by the great Scots fiddler-composer J. Scott Skinner (1843-1927), who explains at the bottom of his manuscript copy [1] that the cairngorm was "a gold scarf pin presented to the composer by an enthusiastic Perthshire amateur." He also notes: "This Reel was written at the suggestion of Mr Alexander Troup, Ballater, a gentleman who has done valuable service to Scottish Music. The composer has known him for 30 years." In the early decades of the 20th century Skinner published a number of folios called the Cairngorm Series, each with nine or ten tunes arranged for piano and violin, some newly composed and others previously published.
