HEN'S CONCERT, THE. See "Hen's March (1) (The)," "Hen's March to the Midden." Irish, Air (4/4 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The provenance given here is nominally Irish, piper O'Farrell's origin. However, the tune is usually thought to have Scots or Northumbrian origins, and was popular among (Northumbrian) pipers. It was well-known in the late 18th century, and O'Farrell perhaps learned it in London (where he resided for many years). Irish versions, from Ulster (c.f. John Doherty), appear to be imports from Scotland.
