Biographical notes

WILLIAM CAMPBELL. Very little is known of musician and music publisher William Campbell. He is known to have played the viol and violin, and that he played in the grand performances at Westminster Abbey [according to Doane's 1794 Musical Directory]. He was active in London as a music publisher between c. 1778 and c. 1815, printing collections for others (including John Gow) and, after 1785, in his own name. He is known to have had several London addresses, many in Soho, in the course of his publishing career. For more information, see Paul Cooper's excellent research article "The Dance Collections of William Campbell]]" at the Regency Dances site [1].
