Biographical notes
WILLIAM CAMPBELL. Very little is known of Scotch musician and music publisher William Campbell. He is known to have played the viol and violin, and that he played in the grand performances at Westminster Abbey [according to Doane's 1794 Musical Directory]. He was active in London as a music publisher between c. 1778 and c. 1815, printing collections for others (including John Gow) and, after 1785, in his own name. He is known to have had many London addresses, many in Soho, in the course of his publishing career. According to Frank Kidson[1] Campbell's publications "consist principally of minor books of dances...[that] runs to twenty-seven books, and was re-issued, and probably continued fromt he 22nd up to this number by Robert Birchall...he published many of Francis Werner's sets of Cotillions and Country Dances. Werner was a dancing master and master of the ceremonies at Almack's and the Festino Rooms."
