BLACK HORSE [1], THE. AKA and see "Washington’s March (1)." Irish, Hornpipe. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The first strain has similarities with "Constitution Hornpipe (1)" and "Golden Wreath Hornpipe," printed in Ryan's Mammoth Collection (1883), and Kerr's Merry Melodies (1880's), both of which predate Frank Roche's 1912 collection. The tune presents few of the more typical Irish style characteristics, and may have been imported. Ira Ford's "Exhibition March No. 1" also has an identical first strain, and a similar second strain. See also note for "Annotation:Washington’s March (1)" for more.
