I was a recorder player till I was in my early twenties, when I saw the Chieftains in Edinburgh in 1972 or ‘73. I immediately went out and bought the Chieftains 3 LP and a Generation C whistle. Forty-odd years later, I don’t know how many whistles I own. I also play Scottish smallpipes, guitar and mountain dulcimer.
I live in Melrose in the Scottish Borders, and have a strong Border bias to my repertoire, and, having spent a few years in NE England, there is a lilt to my hornpipes that is distinctly Geordie. My grandfather, a mandolin player, was from Waterford, and I was once told in Galway that there is a touch of Munster in my playing style, too.
