ORKNEY [1]. AKA and see "Maoile nan Crogaichean." Scottish, Reel. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (McKercher): AABB' (Stewart-Robertson). Originally populated by the Picts, the Orkney Islands were conquered by the Vikings under Ragnald about the year 874 and became a separate earldom, nominally subject to the kings of Norway. They remained under Norwegian sovereignty until 1469, although the earls of Orkney had been Scottish since 1379.
