ORKNEY [1]. AKA and see "Maoile nan Crogaichean." Scottish, Reel. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (McKercher): AABB' (Stewart-Robertson). Originally populated by the Picts, the Orkney Islands were conquered by the Vikings under Ragnald about the year 874 and became a separate earldom, nominally subject to the kings of Norway. They remained under Norwegian sovereignty until 1469, although the earls of Orkney had been Scottish since 1379. McKercher, who published the reel in 1824, indicated it was "Old" at the time.
