Wes Autio grew up in a rural/tourist part of western Maine and received his BS degree in Horticulture from Virginia Tech and his MS. and PhD degrees in Pomology from UMass Amherst. In 1985, he joined the faculty at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Currently the director of the Stockbridge School of Agriculture in the College of Natural Sciences, he interacts regularly with tree-fruit farmers and the many individuals interested in tree fruit in the landscape. Dr. Autio’s research focuses on apple and peach rootstocks, controlling growth in apple trees with mechanical and hormonal approaches, and chemical thinning of apples. He teaches courses in pruning fruit crops for undergraduates and in statistical analysis for graduate students. He has long been interested in traditional music and has recently started playing mostly Irish music on the mandolin.
