BATHEING MACHINE. English, Jig. G Major. Standard tuning. AABB. The melody is unique to Charles and Samuel Thompson's third country dance collection (London, 1773). A bathing machine was a kind of shack on wheels that could be let into the surf at beaches. This would allow preservation of modesty (primarily for women) while wading or swimming in the ocean. Some attribute the invention of the bathing machine to Benjamin Beale, around 1750, at Margate, Kent.
