BLECKYNDEN'S MAGGOT. English, Jig. F Major. Standard tuning. AABB. The melody also appears in John Johnson's 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 8 (London, 1758), and (after their 1757 printing) was again published by the Thompson's in Complete Collection of 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 3 (London, 1773). A 'maggot' in this context was a bit of melody, akin to the term 'fancy' or 'whim', a trifle of a melody (from the French and Italian magioletta); the term was characteristic of the late 17th and early 18th century, however, and by mid-18th century was out of fashion.

Printed source: Thompson (Compleat Collection of 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 1), 1757; No. 107.
