BONNIE SWEET BESSIE. American, Quadrille or Jig. A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). ABBC. The repeated refrain is a common convention in songs, and, indeed, Ford's piece is an adaptation of a song by American James L. Gilbert, words by Arabella Root. It was published in the 1870's and remained a popular sentimental favorite for over fifty years.

Printed source: Ford (Traditional Music in America), 1940; p. 75.
