BAYADERE, LA. American, Polka or Reel (2/4 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. The melody is contianed in the mid-19th century music manuscript collection of Long Island ship's captain and fiddler biography:Isaac Homan. It predates the famous 1877 ballet La Bayadère (The Temple Dancer) by French choreographer Marius Petipa to the music of Ludwig Minkus, and is not associated with it. Homan's tune is much more likely to have derived from an 1831 one-act ballet called La Bayadere, with music composed by Auber and arranged by M. Musard. Homan, a dance musician with numerous quadrille sets in his manuscripts, may have obtained the tune from the publication Musard's Twenty Fourth Set of Quadrilles, or, First Set from Auber's Opera La Bayadere.
