BIRK HALL. Scottish, Strathspey. A Mixolydian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB'. Pipe Tune. "From Ross's Collection" (Skye), referring to Robert Ross's Choice Selection of Scots, Reels,Country Dances & Strathspeys (1780). In 1780 Birkhall was a seat of one of the Gordon branches, but it was sold to Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert and has remained in the hands of the British royalty ever since. The name derives from the Scottish birk haugh, meaning 'Birch River-meadow'.
