BROWN EYED GIRL, THE. AKA and see "Primrose Lasses," "Primrose Girl (2)," "Kilworth Lasses (The)," "Maids (The)." Irish, Reel. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The second strain could be substituted for the second strain of "Boys of Portaferry (The)," although the first parts are not compatible. A version of the tune was entered into the 1890's music manuscript collection of Patrick D. Reidy, an Irish dancing master in London originally from Castleisland, North Kerry. He was a correspondent of Francis O'Neill's and sent him a music copybook in 1902 containing this tune. Therein Reidy makes the claim the it was composed by biography:Michael B. Shanahan, in 1865.
