ELIZABETH MACDERMOTT ROE. AKA - "Betty Ini Diarmada Ruaidh" (Betty MacDermott Roe), "Planxty Dodwell," "Plangsty Dodwell." Irish, Planxty (2/4 time). G Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Composed by blind Irish harper Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738). The title is thought to refer to Elizabeth, daughter of Henry and Anne MacDermott Roe of the family on whose estate O'Carolan's father was the blacksmith in Ballyfarnon, County Roscommon. She is the 'Iníon Rúairí Og', the daughter of Rory Oge of the verse. Elizabeth married Robert Maguire of Tempo, County Fermanagh, another family for whose members O'Carolan dedicated a large number of tunes (O'Carolan himself married a Mary Maguire from close to Tempo, although her connection with the family is unknown). The "Plangsty Dodwell" title is from collector Edward Bunting, although O'Sullivan concludes it is incorrect.
