ERRIGAL BRAES. Irish, Reel. Ireland, northern Ireland. D Major ('A' part) & D Mixolydian ('B' part). Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. A 'crooked' reel -- an extra measure of 2/4 in each strain. See also the related "Paddy Taylor's (1)."

Source for notated version: fiddler Peter Turbit (Co. Tyrone) [Feldman & O'Doherty]. Turbit was heir to an older fiddling tradition in County Tyrone, whose repertoire had largely been taught by his uncle Ned in the begging of the 20th century. His won playing tended to be slow and deliberate ('rustic'), with much use of open drones. It struck some observers (such as Allen Feldman) as akin to Appalachian fiddling, but whether this was a truly regional way of playing in Co. Tyrone, or a family or ideosyncratic style, has not been determined due to the paucity of older musicians collected from the region.
