GENERAL ELLIOT'S DELIGHT. English, Jig. A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'BB. The melody is unique to London publisher Charles and Samuel Thompson's 1765 country dance collection. General George Augustus Elliot (c. 1718-1790) was a Roxburghshire-born career military officer renowned for his intellect, austerity, self-discipline, and his skilful handling of troops. Many of his regiments were held up as military models. He was an aide-de-camp to George II in 1759, and later defended Gibraltar from siege by the French and Spanish.
