GURTEEN CROSS. AKA and see "Church Street Polka (1)," "Flanagan's Polka," "St. Mary's." Irish, Polka. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The County Sligo polka was recorded by Paddy Killoran (1904-1965) under the title "Gurteen Cross," paired with "Memories of Ballymote" (the latter named for the town Killoran hailed from). The "Church Street" title for this tune comes from the name of a medley in which this tune was played on the Chieftains first album. The improbable "Gurkin Cross" was the title on Ben Lennon's "Natural Bridge" album, obviously a miss-hearing of "Gurteen Cross." "Oyster River Reel (The)" has a cognate first strain.
