JOHN BARTON. English, Country Dance Tune (2/4 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCC. The melody appears in John Johnson's Choice Collection of 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 5 (London, 1748), and subsequently in David Rutherford's Compleat Collection of 200 of the Most Celebrated Country Dances (London, 1756), and Charles and Samuel Thompson's 1757 country dance collection. It can also be found in the music manuscript collections of Northumbrian musician William Vickers (1770, appearing as "John Burton"), and London musician Thomas Hammersley (1790).
