KICK THE WORLD BEFORE YOU [1]. Scottish, Country Dance Tune (9/8 time). A Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody appears in the Drummond Castle Manuscript (in the possession of the Earl of Ancaster at Drummond Castle), inscribed "A Collection of Country Dances written for the use of his Grace the Duke of Perth by Dav. Young, 1734." Young was a Scottish musician and dancing master, and he also included the two-strain melody in his later MacFarlane Manuscript (c. 1740, No. 19). A different 9/8 tune with the exact title appears in Oswald's Caledonian Pocket Companion (1760), while the similarly-titled "Kick the World before Me " (in 9/4 time) appears in Walsh's Second Book of the Compleat Country Dancing Master (3d Edition, 1735).
