LADIES OF LEINSTER, THE ({Na} Mna Uasle {Ua} Laigeann). AKA and see “Ladus (The),” "Prohibition (The)." Irish, Reel. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (O'Neill/1850 & 1001): AA'B (O'Neill/Krassen): AABB (Mulvihill). The melody appears in William Bradbury Ryan's Mammoth Collection (1883) as "The Ladus", probably a corruption of "The Ladies", short for "Ladies of Leinster." It was recorded in New York in 1922 as the first tune in a medley called "The Prohibition" by Sligo fiddle masters Michael Coleman and Tom Gannon.

Source for notated version: Brendan Mulvihill (Baltimore, Md.)[Mulvihill]; "Dunphy" [O'Neill]. Although there is little information about him, Dunphy apparently was a uilleann piper of O'Neill's acquaintance who contributed some tunes to the O'Neill collection (see "Dunphy's Hornpipe," for one).

Printed sources: Mulvihill (1st Collection), 1986; No. 59, p. 15. O'Neill (Krassen), 1976; p. 143. O'Neill (Music of Ireland: 1850 Melodies), 1903; No. 1460, p. 270. O'Neill (Dance Music of Ireland: 1001 Gems), 1907; No. 691, p. 122.

Recorded sources: New Republic 2330 (78 RPM), Michael Coleman & Tom Gannon (1922. Appears as first tune in medley "The Prohibition").
