MARDI GRAS. American, Reel. A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Mardi Gras [1] is French for 'Fat Tuesday' and refers to Shrove Tuesday, which occurs just before the Lenten season that begins on Ash Wednesday. New Orleans, famous for its Mardi Gras celebration, was not the first town in which the they occurred. Mobile, Alabama, and Biloxi, Mississippi, were both capitals of French Louisiana for a time, and held Mardi Gras celebrations in the beginning of the 18th century. It was not until 1856 that New Orleans began an organized Mardi Gras festival.
