MASTER'S RETURN, THE. AKA and see "Dawn Rising," "Filleadh an Mháistir," "Floating Bottle (The)," "Paddy Killoran’s," "Rising Sun (1)," "Tom Bawn’s." Irish, Reel. One of many members of the "Rising Sun" family of reels, which also includes "Blackthorn Stick (4) (The)." The name of this version was coined by Seamus Ennis in 1949 on the occasion of a return visit to Ireland of renowned fiddler Paddy Killoran. Killoran and his band played aboard ship and toured the country before sailing back, and while in Dublin was interviewed for Radio Eire. Philippe Varlet owns a copy of the interview on acetate disc, and says that Ennis asked Killoran about New York musicians, and Killoran replies, naming among others the 'new arrivals' Denis Murphy and Martin Wynne. Ennis later recorded the tune as "Paddy Killoran's." Philadelphia fiddler John Vesey has recorded the tune as "Ed Reavy's Fancy," and Varlet says he has c. 1950's home recordings of Reavy playing the tune under the title "Martin Wynne's."
