MISS CATHERINE STEWART--PETTYVAICH. AKA – “Lady Catherine Stewart.” Scottish, Jig (12/8 time). F Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. Composed by William Marshall (1748-1833).
Miss Catherine was the daughter of Thomas Steward and Ann Gordon, and was born in 1767 at the farm of Keithmore, a holding of Lord Gordon. Marshall and his family resided at Keithmore in the 1790’s, as it had been vacated by the Stewarts who had moved to the farm of Pittyvaich on Lord Duff’s land (Moyra Cowie, The Life and Times of William Marshall, 1999). Marshall would have had contact with the family in his capacity as Lord Gordon’s Steward of the Household.
