MISS KATHERINE STEWART FORBES (STRATHSPEY--OF ACHMEDDEN). Scottish, Strathspey. F Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. Composed by William Marshall (1748-1833). Moyra Cowie (The Life and Times of William Marshall, 1999), thinks Miss Katherine was a relation of Sir William Forbes of Pitsligo Castle, a grandson of the 4th Laird who forfeited his entire holdings after Culloden, and who was sustained for a time on the kindness of his tenantry and friends, while he lived in caves disguised as a beggar. Sir William was a banker who was able to purchase the forfeited estate of Achmeddan.
