MISS URQUHART OF MELDRUM. AKA and see "Miss Gordon of Nethermuir." Scottish, Strathspey. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. Composed by Isaac Cooper (c. 1755-c. 1820), whose name, according to John Glen, "first comes under our notice in an advertisement of 31st March 1783, beginning as follows:- "Isaac Cooper, musician in Banff, returns his most grateful thanks to those who have employed him in the musical way, and begs leave to inform them that he still continues to teach the following instruments." "Miss Urquhart of Meldrum" was later renamed "Miss Gordon of Nethermuir."
Meldrum is in Aberdeenshire and was seat of the Urquhart Chiefs until the death in 1898 of the 22nd Chief of Clan Urquhart, Major Beauchamp Colclough Urquhart of Meldrum. Meldrum House has been turned into a hotel in modern times.
