O LITTLE GIRL WHAT MAKES YOU LOOK SO CLEVER. AKA and see "Girl that Looks so Clever O!," "Susan Lick the Ladle," "Darkey Under the Woodpile." American, Schottische? (4/4 time). USA, southwestern Pa. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. Bayard (1981) associates Pennsylvania-collected versions with the Scottish "Lick the Ladle Sandy (1)," printed by the Gows (a derivative of the Scottish title as well as the tune remained in tradition in Pennsylvania as "Susan Lick the Ladle"). Bayard remarked that he was not able to trace the tune satisfactorily in British and Irish collections, though he considered it to have a "marked Scoto-Irish flavor." He sees some general resemblance to "Irish Hautboy (The)," although stops short of calling it a cognate tune.
