OLD RED PETTICOAT, THE. England, Jig (6/8 time). England, Isle of Mann. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune is from the manuscript collection of Dr. John Clague (1842-1908), currently kept at the Manx Museum (Isle of Mann). Clague collected on the Isle of Mann from 1893 until after the turn of the 20th century. It was collected by P. Leighton-Stowell from Mrs. Watterson, Colby Level, The Isle of Mann. A thick red flannel petticoat was often worm for warmth in the wintertime by island residents.
