PORT ROBERT. AKA and see “Port Priest.” Scottish, Harp Air (variable metre). The tune (the earliest dateable 'port') was likely composed for the 16th century Reformed cleric Robert Stewart (1516-1586), second son of John, 11th Earl of Lennox, and his countess, Lady Elizabeth Stewart. The alternate title for the melody comes from the Straloch Manuscript' (collected between 1620-1627 by Robert Gordon of Straloch, the first person to receive the degree of Master of Arts at the College of Aberdeen). Stewart was not only a representative of the church, but later accepted an earldom and was a supporter of the arts. The tune is printed by Sanger & Kinnaird in Tree of Strings (1992, p. 176).
