WHEN THE BATTLE’S O’ER. AKA – “After the Battle.” Scottish, Retreat March (3/4 time). A Mixolydian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. A late 19th century composition by Pipe Major William Robb (1863-1909), of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, the tune entered piping repertoire before World War I. The late Andy Stewart set lyrics to the tune in 1961, which is similar to the melody Thomas Moore used in the early 19th century for his song “Last Rose of Summer (The).”
