WINCHESTER CAMP. English, Country Dance Tune & Jig (6/8 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody and country dance instructions appear in a few collections of the latter 18th century, beginning with Longman, Lukey and Broderip's Bride's Favourite Collection of 200 Select Country Dances, Cotillons (London, 1776), and also appearing in Longman and Broderip's Compleat Collection of 200 Favorite Country Dances (1781) and Samuel, Ann & Peter Thompson's Compleat Collection of 200 Favorite Country Dances, vol. 5 (London, 1788, p. 91). Winchester, Hampshire, was one of the locations for stationing and training troops during the latter 18th century wars with France.
