CARACASTLE LASS, THE. AKA - "Carracastle Lass," "Carrowcastle Lasses." Irish, Reel. Played in both the key of 'G' and 'D'. Caracastle is a town in County Mayo. The tune is associated with flute and whistle player Roger Sherlock, who has a personal setting. Sherlock was originally from County Mayo, directly on the border with County Sligo, and he is an inheritor of the south Sligo/north Roscommon musical tradition, although he spent much of his adult life in London where he played famously with other Irish émigrés throughout the 1950's and 1960's. He was the source for Breathnach's "Jack Maguire's" (CRÉ III, 105).
