REEL DU SECOURS DIRECT (Direct Relief Reel). French-Canadian, Jig (6/8 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'B. In response to the Great Depression of the early 1930's the government in Quebec instituted work projects programs (like America's WPA), but by 1932 it was clear that these programs would not be enough, and it increasingly relied on direct relief (secures direct), or welfare payments, to provide families in need with enough to sustain themselves. In 1936 the emphasis shifted back to public work projects.
