Fr. John Quinn finds the first strain to be a derivative of Mrs. Gunn's Strathspey <div class="mw-ext-score" data-midi="/w/images/lilypond/p/e/peruce4rbx2jaaz0g17jmu1ii3pigju/peruce4r.midi"><img src="/w/images/lilypond/p/e/peruce4rbx2jaaz0g17jmu1ii3pigju/peruce4r.png" width="697" height="56" alt=" X:1 M:C L:1/16 K:Emin B2|GE3B3G E3FG3E|FD3A3F d3AFD3|GE3B3G E3eG3B|A3c~B3A GE3E3B| "/></div> printed in London by John Gow in the very early 19th century. Fr. Quinn finds the first strain of "Gatehouse Maid (2)" is shared with "Miss Gunnon" in County Leitrim piper and fiddler biography:Stephen Grier's c. 1883 music manuscript collection. There is a recording of fiddler Séamus Connolly playing the tune on Radio Éireann in May, 1965, under the title "Gossan that Beat His Father", but this seems to Fr. Quinn to be more the result of some confusion.
