The alternate title, "Devil in a Bush (The)," seems idiosyncratic to Northumbrian musician William Vickers, who included it in his 1770-1772 music manuscript. It was also included by Waverton, Wigton, Cumbria, multi-instrumentalist John Rook (as "Kincaldrum's Reel") in his large 1840 music manuscript (p. 189). American versions of the reel can be found in Boston-based Elias Howe publications as "Maid of Argyle's (The)" and "Muldoon's Favorite." See also the related "England's Glory."
Kincaldrum is a place-name in central Angus, not far from Glamis. There is Kincaldrum Hill (912 ft.) near Kincaldrum House, once the seat of the Baxter family. The manor has since become a ruin.
