KINCALDRUM('S). AKA - "Kurcaldrum's Reel." AKA and see "Devil in a Bush (The)," "Maid of Argyle's (The)," "Muldoon's Favorite," "Parson in the Suds." Scottish; Reel. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (Surenne): AAB (Athole, Gow): AABB (Petrie): AABB' (Skye). The alternate title, "Devil in a Bush (The)," seems idiosyncratic to Northumbrian musician William Vickers, who included it in his 1770-1772 music manuscript. It was also included by Waverton, Wigton, Cumbria, multi-instrumentalist John Rook (as "Kincaldrum's Reel") in his large 1840 music manuscript (p. 189).
American versions of the reel can be found in Boston-based Elias Howe publications as "Maid of Argyle's (The)" and "Muldoon's Favorite." See also the related "England's Glory." It was entered simply as "Scotch Reel" in the 1904 music manuscript collection of West Sumner, Me., fiddler Clinton W. Bisbee, although the inscription on the front cover indicates the that contents were copied from the Dec. 25, 1864, music manuscript of Frank Richardson,
who lived in a town called Mt. Vernon, Me., later called Canton, Me..
Kincaldrum is a place-name in central Angus, not far from Glamis. There is Kincaldrum Hill (912 ft.) near Kincaldrum House, once the seat of the Baxter family. The manor has since become a ruin.
