GREEN RIVER WALTZ. Old-Time, Waltz. USA, Kentucky. The title appears in a list of traditional Ozark Mountain fiddle tunes compiled by musicologist/folklorist Vance Randolph, published in 1954. The tune was composed and recorded by fiddler Clifford Gross (1898-1956), a member of Texas based Light Crust Doughboys in the late 1930's (who replaced fiddler Bob Wills). Gross was born in Kentucky, where he learned much of his core repertoire, according to Charles Wolfe (Kentucky Country, 1996, p. 89), including this tune.
