ADMIRAL CALDER'S HORNPIPE. English, Hornpipe (whole time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "Admiral Calder's Hornpipe" was entered into two musicians' manuscripts from northern England, C.J. Surtees (c. 1819, Northumberland) and J. Roose (1850, Manchester). Surtees' manuscript has his name and date on the cover, but it is written in many hands.
British Vice-Admiral Calder’s squadron intercepted a Franco-Spanish fleet under Admiral Villeneuve off north-western Spain in 1805, as it returned from its diversionary voyage to the West Indies just before the decisive Battle of Trafalgar. Unfortunately, Calder neglected to engage the enemy fleet for two days, and his failure to engage it decisively led to his formal censure. He was never given another command.
