AUCHINCRUIVE. Scottish, Reel. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. Attributed to fiddler-composer Biography:John French (1752-1803) of Cumnock, Ayrshire. Auchincruive [1] is the name of a former country house and estate in South Ayrshire, Scotland, the residence of "the incomparable" (as Burns said) Lucy Oswald (nee Johnston) and her husband Richard A. Oswald.
In 1764 the estate of Auchincruive was sold to the merchant Richard Oswald (father of Lucy Johnston's husband), who made his fortune in the slave trade and in brokering business deals throughout England's colonial empire. He was a member of the British commission that negotiated the end of the American War of Independence that culminated with the Treaty of Paris in 1783. He built the present Auchincruive House (completed in 1767) to a design by the renowned architect Robert Adam. Adam also designed Oswald's Temple, a castellated temple or tea-house, which stands on a nearby hill and was completed in 1778.
