Annotation:Bath Hornpipe
BATH HORNPIPE. AKA and see "Newton's Hornpipe." English, Hornpipe. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune appears as an untitled hornpipe in Helperby, Yorkshire, fiddler Lawrence Leadley's (1827-1897) music manuscript copybook, compiled primarily in the 1840's and 1850's. It also appears in the G. Huddeswell manuscript, Leeds, Yorkshire, and, under the title "Newton's Hornpipe," in the large c. 1850 music manuscript collection of Manchester, England, musician biography:John Roose. There was a "New Bath Hornpipe" in William Vickers 1780 Northumbrian manuscript, and, while some tunes with the appellation "New..." are sometimes written in response (or to ride the coattails of) a popular tune, Leadley's "Bath Hornpipe" does not sound like it predated the 19th century.
