BATTLE OF SHERIFFMUIR [1], THE. Scottish, Pibroch (6/8 time). A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCC. This pipe pibroch is said to have been composed by John MacIntyre of the brae Raunoch family (who was then Piper to Menzies of Menzies) after the well-fought but indecisive victory of the Stewarts during the Jacobite rising of 1715. Collinson (1975) maintains this piece gave the "Sherramuir March" its name, but he says MacIntyre's march was a previously existing melody identified with the Stewart clan as their march tune. Not only was it played at Sheriffmuir, says Collinson, but it had previously been heard at Pinkie (1547) and Inverlochy (1645), and again post-Sheriffmuir at Prestonpans in 1745 during the last Jacobite rebellion. Robert Burns contributed a song called "The Battle of Sherra-Moor" to James Johnson's Scots Musical Museum (1790), although it is set to a duple-time tune called "The Cameronian Rant."
